Appraisals

A professional assessment of an artwork’s value that results in a formal, comprehensive written document. It requires a full evaluation of the work or collection, including detailed analysis of condition, dimensions, and other physical characteristics. Appraisals take into account multiple factors such as provenance, rarity, historical and cultural significance, and current market value. They are typically prepared for purposes such as insurance, charitable donation, probate, or auction.

Valuations

A professional opinion of value, is generally less formal and less comprehensive. While it is still thoroughly researched—particularly with respect to the photographer, the work’s history, and current market conditions—it provides a concise overview rather than a fully itemized assessment.
